One of the most common questions we hear from women considering surrogacy is: “How long does the whole process take?”
While the surrogacy timeline can vary depending on individual circumstances, the average journey takes 15 to 18 months from the time you apply to the time you deliver.
This guide breaks down each step so you can get a clear picture of what’s ahead — and how we support you along the way.
Your surrogacy journey starts with an online application and a conversation with our recruitment & intake manager.
During this step, we will:
Confirm basic qualifications (age, health history, pregnancy experience)
Answer your questions about the process and compensation
Have you complete releases for medical records
“I filled out the form during my lunch break. Within a few days, I was talking with the intake manager and learning so much. It felt real — and exciting!”
Nicole, 29
Once you’ve been pre-approved, we’ll coordinate:
Conducting background checks (for you and anyone 18+ in your home)
Gathering your medical records for review
Pre-approval by the fertility clinic
The screening process can take a few weeks to complete, especially depending on clinic schedules.
Finding the right Intended Parents is one of the most personal — and important — steps. During this time:
We’ll review your preferences (e.g. location, family type, communication style)
You’ll review intended parent profiles
A virtual or in-person meeting is arranged
If everyone agrees, we will make it official!
Some surrogates identify Intended Parents quickly, while others may take a bit longer. The goal is always a thoughtful and meaningful connection.
You’ll each have your own legal representation to review and negotiate the surrogacy contract — which clearly outlines:
Compensation
Medical decisions
Expectations during pregnancy
Delivery plans
Post-birth communication (if agreed upon)
Nothing moves forward until both sides feel confident and supported. All legal fees are covered by our agency.
Now the journey to pregnancy begins. You will:
Begin fertility medications (pills, patches, and/or injections) to prepare your body
Visit the fertility clinic for bloodwork and ultrasounds at least once a week
Some surrogates get pregnant on the first transfer, while others may need a second attempt. Your care team will guide and support you throughout.
Once pregnancy is confirmed, your journey follows a familiar path — regular prenatal care, support from your agency, and communication with the intended parents. Most surrogates build lifelong friendships with their intended families during this time. We’ll also:
Ensure reimbursements and compensation are handled smoothly
Help coordinate travel (if needed)
Check in regularly for emotional support and guidance
Some common factors that may impact your timeline:
Clinic availability or travel schedules
Needing multiple embryo transfers
Difficulty obtaining medical records for screening
Follow-up for prior pregnancy complications
The good news? Our agency is there to coordinate everything and keep the process moving smoothly — at a pace that works for you.
Every surrogate has a different reason for saying yes. For some, it’s about helping a family. For others, it’s about financial goals or personal growth.
But nearly every surrogate we speak to says the same thing in the end:
"It was one of the most meaningful things I’ve ever done. And I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
Kendra, 38
